Baseball cap inspection mainly conducts scientific testing and analysis on physical and mechanical property testing, colour fastness testing, dimensional stability testing, chemical safety performance testing, accessory safety testing and functional testing, objectively assessing the product quality grade and issuing a detailed test report, providing a basis for manufacturers' quality control and downstream users' product acceptance.

Testing Items

Physical and mechanical property testing: Mainly evaluates the durability and functionality of the baseball cap. It includes the bursting strength testing, simulating the impact of the head on the crown of the cap; the seam strength testing, checking the firmness of the joint between the cap body and the brim; and the repeated stretching testing, examining the fatigue resistance of the elastic band or adjustment buckle, ensuring no deformation or breakage during the long-term use.

Colour fastness testing: This testing targets the colour stability of the baseball cap fabric in various environments. It includes the colour fastness to rubbing (dry and wet rubbing), colour fastness to perspiration, colour fastness to water and colour fastness to light. The testing aims to prevent the colour shedding or the staining of the clothes caused by the friction, sweat, rain or sunlight exposure during the daily wearing, affecting the appearance and use safety of the product.

Dimensional stability testing: Evaluates the dimensional change rate of the baseball cap after washing or dry cleaning. By simulating the domestic washing procedures, the dimensional differences of the key parts such as the cap circumference and cap depth before and after washing are measured. This indicator directly affects the wearing comfort and product life, and is the core link of the quality control, ensuring that the cap can still maintain the fit after multiple washes.

Chemical safety performance testing: In accordance with the domestic and foreign regulations (such as GB 18401 and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100), the hazardous substance screening is carried out on the baseball cap. The key tests are the formaldehyde content, decomposable carcinogenic aromatic amine dyes, pH value, heavy metals (such as lead and cadmium) and phthalates, ensuring that the product has no chemical hazards when contacting the human skin, and safeguarding the health of the consumers.

Accessory safety testing: The small parts such as the buttons, rivets, logos and adjustment buckles on the baseball cap are tested. The main items include the tensile strength testing of the small parts, preventing them from being pulled off by the children and causing the choking and suffocation risks; and the sharp edges and sharp points testing, ensuring that all the accessories have no burrs or sharp corners, conforming to the children's product safety specifications.

Functional testing: The special tests are carried out for the baseball caps with special functions. For example, the UV protection performance (UPF value) testing of the sun-protection caps; the surface water resistance (water repellency grade) testing of the waterproof caps; and the air permeability and moisture absorption and quick drying performance testing. These tests verify whether the claimed functions of the product meet the requirements, and are the important reflection of its added value.

Testing Scope

Classification by material: The testing covers the baseball caps made of the various common fabrics. Mainly including the caps of the woven or knitted fabrics such as the pure cotton, polyester-cotton blends, nylon and polyester fibres; and the caps of the special fabrics such as the corduroy, denim and wool. The testing emphasis of the different materials is different, for example, the cotton caps focus on the shrinkage, and the chemical fibre caps focus on the colour fastness and anti-pilling.

Classification by process and style: Including but not limited to the flat-brim caps, curved-brim caps, five-panel caps, six-panel caps and trucker caps. The testing needs to consider the characteristics of the different structures, such as the colour fastness and adhesion of the embroidery or printing patterns, the shaping effect and bending resistance of the brim, and the durability testing of the adjustable buckles, Velcro or elastic fabrics.

Classification by applicable object and use: Covering the adult baseball caps, children's baseball caps, sports-specific caps and fashion casual caps. Among them, the children's baseball caps need to implement the stricter safety standards (such as the Chinese GB 31701), adding the mandatory testing of the small parts and cord safety. The sports caps pay more attention to the performance indicators such as the moisture absorption and perspiration, and lightweight.

Classification by supply chain link: The testing runs through the whole life cycle of the product. Including the incoming inspection of the raw materials (yarns, fabrics and accessories), the semi-finished product inspection in the production process (such as the cut pieces and embroidery), and the final inspection before the finished products leave the factory. In addition, the market supervision spot checks and the brand merchant inspections also belong to the important testing scope.

Classification by the market regulation regions: The testing needs to comply with the regulations and standards of the target sales regions. For example, the export to the EU needs to meet the REACH regulation and GPSD directive; the export to the US needs to comply with the CPSIA and CPSC requirements; and the sales in the Chinese market must comply with the national mandatory standards such as GB 18401 and GB 31701, and the testing scope is adjusted accordingly.

Classification by the brand and quality agreements: Many well-known brands have the enterprise quality standards or inspection standards (AQL sampling standards) stricter than the national standards. The testing scope also includes the conformity verification of the technical agreements of these specific brands, such as the Logo process requirements, the stitch density of the specific parts and the accuracy of the packaging and hang tag information.

Testing Methods

Standard reference method: This is the most core testing method, carrying out the testing in accordance with the publicly issued national, international or industry standards. The commonly used standards include the Chinese GB/T series, the American AATCC/ASTM series, the international ISO series and the European EN series. For example, the colour fastness testing often follows GB/T 3920 and GB/T 3922, and the dimensional change rate follows GB/T 8629.

Instrumental analysis method: Dedicated instruments are used for the quantitative or qualitative analysis of the specific items. For example, a UV-visible spectrophotometer or ICP-MS (inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer) is used to precisely determine the hazardous dyes and heavy metal contents; an electronic fabric strength tester is used to test the tensile and bursting strengths; and a light fastness testing machine is used to simulate the sunlight exposure.

Sensory inspection method: The trained inspectors evaluate through the senses such as the vision and touch. It is mainly applied to the appearance quality inspection, such as checking whether the sewing process is flat, whether there are thread ends, stains and colour differences; whether the pattern is symmetrical and clear; and whether the cap shape is upright and symmetrical. This method is often compared with the standard sample caps or the defect limit samples.

Simulated use test method: The actual use scenarios are simulated through the equipment to evaluate the product performance. For example, a Martindale abrasion tester is used to simulate the friction of the long-term wearing; a perspiration tester is used to simulate the human perspiration environment; and a washing machine is used for multiple washes to test the dimensional stability and overall durability. This method can effectively predict the service life of the product.

Chemical test method: Mainly used for the chemical safety item testing. For example, the water extraction method is adopted to determine the formaldehyde content, a gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) is used to detect the prohibited azo dyes, and a pH meter is used to measure the acidity and alkalinity of the aqueous extract of the fabric. These methods require a professional chemical laboratory environment and operators.

Physical measurement method: The basic measuring tools such as the rulers, tape measures, thickness gauges and scales are used to precisely measure the size specifications (cap circumference, cap height and brim length and width), weight and accessory dimensions of the baseball cap. All the measurements need to be carried out under the standard temperature and humidity environment, and compared with the product specification table or the tolerance table, to judge whether they meet the requirements.

Testing Instruments and Equipment

Fabric strength tester: Used to detect the physical strength of the baseball cap fabric and seams. This equipment can carry out the tests such as the tensile, tearing and bursting, and record the breaking strength and elongation through the sensors. The precise data provide the key basis for evaluating the durability of the cap and preventing the cracking during the wearing or washing, and it is the core equipment of the physical property testing.

Colour fastness tester series: Including the rubbing fastness tester, perspiration fastness tester and washing fastness tester. The rubbing fastness tester carries out the reciprocating friction on the sample through the rubbing finger with a specified pressure, evaluating the staining situation in the dry and wet states. These instruments objectively quantify the stability of the colour under the various stimuli, and are the important tools for evaluating the appearance retention ability of the product.

Standard light source cabinet: Used for the objective colour comparison and colour difference assessment of the baseball cap. The cabinet provides multiple standard light sources such as D65, TL84, CWF and UV, which can eliminate the interference of the ambient light, ensuring that the inspectors accurately judge whether the colour of the fabric is consistent under the different light source conditions, and whether there are colour differences between the cap body, brim and accessories.

Shrinkage testing machine and oven: Usually composed of a standard household washing machine, dryer or a dedicated shrinkage testing machine, used to simulate the washing and drying processes. Combined with the standard rulers and marking templates for marking and measuring, the dimensional change rate of the various parts of the baseball cap after washing can be precisely calculated. It is the essential equipment for controlling the dimensional stability of the product.

Chemical analysis instruments: Including the pH meter, UV spectrophotometer, gas chromatography-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES). These high-precision instruments are used to detect the hazardous substances such as the formaldehyde, pH value, prohibited azo dyes and heavy metals, ensuring that the product meets the ecological safety regulatory requirements.

Small parts tensile tester: Specially used to detect the tensile strength of the accessories such as the buttons, rivets and logos on the baseball cap. The instrument applies a vertical tensile force to the accessory at a constant speed until it falls off or is damaged, recording the maximum force value. This testing is particularly important for the children's baseball caps, and is the key detection means for evaluating the choking and suffocation risks of the small parts.
