Bamboo board testing is conducted in accordance with relevant standards and industry specifications. Scientific testing and analysis are performed on physical and mechanical property testing, moisture content testing, dimensional stability testing, formaldehyde emission testing, surface and appearance quality testing, and bonding performance testing, objectively assessing the product quality grade. A detailed test report is issued within 7-10 working days, providing a basis for manufacturers' quality control and downstream users' product acceptance.

Testing Items

Physical and mechanical property testing: Mainly evaluates the mechanical strength and stability of bamboo boards, and is the core measure of its usability as a structural or decorative material. Key items include modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity, internal bond strength, surface bond strength, impact resistance and hardness. These indicators are directly related to the load-bearing capacity, deformation resistance and service life of the board, and are important basis for product quality grading.

Moisture content testing: The moisture content of bamboo boards directly affects their dimensional stability and the risk of deformation and cracking in later use. Testing needs to be carried out under constant temperature and humidity conditions using the oven-drying method or the resistance method. Usually, the moisture content of interior bamboo boards should be controlled within 6%-12%; too high moisture content tends to cause mold growth and reduced mechanical properties, while too low may lead to increased brittleness.

Dimensional stability testing: This item is used to evaluate the deformation capacity of bamboo boards under environmental humidity changes. It mainly includes the determination of water absorption thickness swelling (TS) and linear expansion rate. After the specimen is immersed in water for a certain time, the change rate of its thickness or length is measured. A lower swelling rate indicates that the board has better moisture resistance and dimensional stability, making it suitable for environments with large humidity changes.

Formaldehyde emission testing: This is a key mandatory testing item related to indoor environmental safety. In accordance with national standards, it is usually determined by the chamber method, the desiccator method or the perforation extraction method. According to the limit requirements, bamboo boards can be classified as E0 grade, ENF grade or E1 grade. Strictly controlling formaldehyde emission is a prerequisite for safeguarding consumer health and meeting green building material certification.

Surface and appearance quality testing: Includes inspection of color uniformity, grain uniformity, surface smoothness of the board, and the presence of defects such as decay, mold spots, cracks, indentation, blistering and missing edges. This item is mostly carried out in accordance with relevant standards or trade contract agreements, through visual inspection or with the aid of instruments, and directly affects the decorative effect and market value of the product.

Bonding performance testing: For glued bamboo boards or laminated bamboo lumber, it focuses on testing the aging performance and durability of the adhesive layer. Through immersion-peeling tests, boiling water peeling tests and other methods, the bonding strength between bamboo strips or bamboo pieces is inspected. Excellent bonding performance ensures that the board does not delaminate under temperature differences, humidity changes or long-term loads, maintaining structural integrity.

Flame retardancy testing: For bamboo boards used in public places or with special fire protection requirements, flame retardancy testing needs to be carried out. Main methods include oxygen index determination, horizontal/vertical burning tests and cone calorimeter testing. Through testing, the ease of ignition, flame spread rate and heat release rate of the material can be evaluated to determine its fire protection grade.

Testing Scope

Laminated bamboo lumber: Boards made by drying, gluing, assembling bamboo strips or bamboo pieces with parallel grain, and hot-pressing. Testing focuses on its longitudinal mechanical properties (such as tensile and compressive strength parallel to grain), bonding strength, dimensional stability and appearance quality. It is widely used in furniture, flooring, building structural materials and other fields.

Reconstituted bamboo (bamboo-based fiber composite material): A new type of board made from bamboo bundles or bamboo fibers as the basic unit through drying, gluing, assembling and hot-pressing. In addition to conventional physical and mechanical properties, the testing scope pays more attention to its isotropic properties, screw holding power, mold and decay resistance, and durability evaluation as an engineering material.

Bamboo decorative veneer: Usually thin wood obtained by planing or rotary cutting the surface of laminated bamboo lumber, or bamboo skin directly pressed onto the substrate. Testing focuses on surface bonding strength, moisture content, color fastness to light, resistance to hot and cold cycling, as well as the abrasion resistance, scratch resistance, stain resistance and other physicochemical properties of the surface decorative layer.

Bamboo flooring: As a floor covering material, its testing scope has particularities. In addition to conventional items, a comprehensive evaluation of service performance must include abrasion resistance (in revolutions), paint film adhesion, stain resistance, impact resistance, dimensional stability (especially under floor heating conditions) and foot-feel elasticity.

Bamboo cutting boards and kitchen boards: The testing scope focuses on the safety of food contact materials. This includes the migration of heavy metals (such as lead and cadmium), formaldehyde emission, microbial limits, antibacterial performance (if claimed), water resistance, oil resistance, and cracking and deformation after repeated cleaning.

Outdoor bamboo boards: Refers to bamboo boards used for landscaping, outdoor flooring, exterior wall decoration, etc. The testing scope needs to add weather resistance, UV aging resistance, biodegradation resistance (effectiveness of preservative treatment), water absorption, and the evaluation of performance retention after accelerated aging tests (such as xenon arc and salt spray tests).

Customized functional bamboo boards: Such as bamboo boards treated with dyeing, carbonization, flame retardancy, antibacterial and other functional treatments. The testing scope needs to add corresponding items according to the claimed functions, such as color fastness, the influence of carbonization degree on mechanical properties, flame retardancy grade and antibacterial rate, to verify the effectiveness and durability of the functions.

Testing Methods

Standard test methods: Strictly carried out in accordance with national or international standards to ensure the reliability and comparability of test results. Common Chinese standards include GB/T 30364 "Reconstituted bamboo flooring", GB/T 20240 "Laminated bamboo lumber" and GB 18580 "Indoor decorating and refurbishing materials — Limit of formaldehyde emission of wood-based panels and finishing products". International standards such as ISO 22157 (mechanical properties of bamboo structural timber) are also frequently cited.

Physical property test methods: A universal testing machine is used for tests such as modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and internal bond strength; micrometers and vernier calipers combined with a constant temperature and humidity chamber are used for dimensional stability testing; a moisture meter or the oven-drying method is used to determine moisture content; and a Shore or Brinell hardness tester is used to determine surface hardness.

Chemical analysis test methods: Formaldehyde emission testing is the core. The chamber method (GB 18580) is the most accurate and simulates the real environment; the desiccator method is simple to operate and is often used for factory quality control. In addition, chemical analysis methods such as adhesive type identification, preservative loading analysis and heavy metal content determination may also be involved.

Environmental simulation and aging test methods: Equipment such as constant temperature and humidity test chambers, UV aging test chambers and salt spray test chambers are used to simulate harsh environments such as high temperature and high humidity, dry-wet cycling, ultraviolet radiation and salt spray corrosion, so as to accelerate the evaluation of the durability, color fastness and performance decay pattern of bamboo boards.

Non-destructive testing technology: Increasingly widely applied. For example, stress wave and ultrasonic technologies are used to detect internal defects (voids and delamination); near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) is used for rapid analysis of moisture content, density and other parameters; and X-ray or CT scanning is used for three-dimensional structural analysis. These methods are efficient and do not destroy the sample.

Appearance and sensory inspection methods: Under standard lighting conditions, experienced inspectors compare and judge the color, grain and surface defects of the board against standard samples or limit samples by visual inspection. When necessary, instruments such as colorimeters and gloss meters are used for quantitative assistance.

Functional verification methods: For specific functions, corresponding methods are adopted. For example, antibacterial performance is tested in accordance with GB/T 31402 "Plastics — Measurement of antibacterial activity on plastics surfaces"; flame retardancy is tested by the relevant methods in GB 8624 "Classification for burning behaviour of building materials and products"; and abrasion resistance is tested with a Taber abrasion tester.
