Solid wood furniture inspection mainly conducts scientific testing and analysis on appearance quality inspection, wood moisture content determination, dimensional and geometric tolerance testing, structural strength and stability testing, surface coating performance testing and formaldehyde emission testing, objectively assessing the product quality grade and issuing a detailed test report, providing a basis for manufacturers' quality control and downstream users' product acceptance.
Testing Items
Appearance quality inspection: Mainly checks the surface quality of solid wood furniture, including the uniformity of color and grain, and whether there are natural defects such as decay, wormholes, knots, cracks and bark pockets, as well as processing defects such as burrs, scratches, paint sagging, blistering and peeling. This item is the core link for evaluating the aesthetics and initial processing quality of the furniture.
Wood moisture content determination: This is the most critical indicator for ensuring the dimensional stability of solid wood furniture and preventing cracking and deformation. Resistance-type or dielectric-type wood moisture meters are usually used for multi-point measurement at different parts of the wood. According to the different climate regions in China, the moisture content is required to be controlled between 8% and 12%, and it needs to adapt to the annual average equilibrium moisture content of the place of use.
Dimensional and geometric tolerance testing: In accordance with the product drawings or standard provisions, steel tape measures, vernier calipers, try squares and feeler gauges are used to precisely measure the overall dimensions of the furniture, component dimensions and assembly accuracy. The key inspections include the diagonal deviation of cabinets, the uniformity of door gaps and drawer gaps, and the warpage and flatness of panels.
Structural strength and stability testing: Simulates the force conditions in daily use to evaluate the durability of the furniture. This includes tests such as the bending strength of cabinet shelves, the strength of drawer slides, the durability of cabinet doors (number of open-close cycles), the seat surface impact of chairs and the static load of chair legs. These items are directly related to the service life and safety of the furniture.
Surface coating performance testing: Evaluates the physical and chemical properties of the paint film or wood wax oil coating. The main items include paint film adhesion (cross-cut method), abrasion resistance, resistance to hot and cold cycling, dry heat resistance, damp heat resistance, liquid resistance (such as alcohol, coffee and vinegar) and impact resistance. A high-quality coating should have good protective and decorative properties.
Formaldehyde emission testing: In accordance with the provisions of GB 18584-2001 "Indoor decorating and refurbishing materials — Limit of harmful substances of wooden furniture", the 1 m³ chamber method or the desiccator method is used to determine the formaldehyde emission of the furniture. This indicator is a mandatory safety requirement, with the limit value of ≤0.124 mg/m³ (chamber method), directly related to indoor air quality and consumer health.
Heavy metal content testing: Mainly targets the content of soluble heavy metal elements such as lead, cadmium, chromium and mercury in the color paint coating on the furniture surface, in accordance with the GB 18584 standard. Methods such as atomic absorption spectroscopy are used to ensure that the content does not exceed the standard limits, preventing harmful substances from migrating through contact and causing harm to the human body.
Testing Scope
Classification by material: Inspection covers furniture made from different wood species, such as oak, walnut, beech, pine and teak. The physical and mechanical properties, processing characteristics and defect features of different wood species differ, and targeted evaluation needs to be carried out in combination with wood science knowledge during inspection.
By product category: Testing applies to various finished solid wood furniture products, including but not limited to solid wood tables, chairs and stools, cabinets, beds, racks and custom furniture. The testing focus of different categories differs. For example, tables focus on load-bearing and stability, while cabinets focus on the strength of structure and hardware fittings.
By production process: Covers traditional mortise and tenon structures, modern hardware connection structures and solid wood furniture combining the two. Inspection needs to evaluate the firmness, precision and contribution to the overall structural stability of different connection methods, especially the tightness of the mortise and tenon fit and the fatigue life of hardware fittings.
By coating type: Includes furniture with various surface treatment processes such as polyurethane paint, nitro paint, water-based wood paint, wood wax oil, open-pore paint and closed-pore paint. According to the characteristics of the coating material, the corresponding test methods for abrasion resistance, liquid resistance and adhesion need to be selected.
Supply chain links: The testing scope runs through all links from raw materials (sawn timber and veneer), semi-finished products (white blanks), finished products and market-circulated commodities. The moisture content and quality of the wood are controlled at the source, the processing accuracy is monitored during production, and finally the finished products are comprehensively verified.
Disputes and arbitration: When product quality disputes, consumer complaints or procurement acceptance disputes occur, the inspection report issued by a qualified third-party inspection institution can serve as a legally effective technical basis, clarifying the attribution of responsibility.
Testing Methods
Sensory inspection method: Inspectors use senses such as vision, touch and smell, under standard light sources or natural light, to subjectively evaluate the appearance, color, grain, hand feel and odor of the furniture against samples or standard plates. This method is the basic means of preliminary screening and quality grading.
Instrument measurement method: Precision measuring instruments are used to obtain objective data. For example, a moisture meter is used to measure the wood moisture content, a gloss meter to measure the paint film gloss, a coating thickness gauge to measure the paint film thickness, and a mechanical testing machine for strength testing. This method gives accurate, quantifiable and comparable results.
Chamber method (formaldehyde testing): The whole piece of furniture or representative components are placed in a 1 m³ climate chamber with constant temperature, humidity, air flow velocity and air exchange rate. Air in the chamber is regularly extracted and the formaldehyde concentration is analyzed by the acetylacetone spectrophotometric method. This method is closest to the release situation of the furniture in the actual service environment and is the arbitration method.
Desiccator method (formaldehyde testing): The furniture panel specimen is placed at the bottom of a desiccator, with a crystallizing dish containing distilled water placed above it to maintain humidity, and a crystallizing dish containing absorption solution hung above. After sealing, it is placed at a certain temperature for a specified time, and the formaldehyde content in the absorption solution is determined. This method is relatively simple to operate and is often used for internal quality control of factories.
Atomic absorption spectroscopy (heavy metal testing): Coating samples are scraped from the furniture, extracted with a specified acidic simulated perspiration solution, and the extraction solution is atomized and introduced into an atomic absorption spectrometer. By measuring the light absorption at a specific wavelength, the content of soluble heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, chromium and mercury is quantitatively analyzed.
Simulated use test method: Dedicated equipment is used to simulate the mechanical state in actual use. For example, sandbags of a specified weight are used for multiple impacts on the seat surface and tabletop; a repeated loading device is used to test the open-close durability of drawers and cabinet doors; static loads are applied to the front legs and side legs of chairs to check the structural strength.

Testing Instruments and Equipment
Wood moisture meter: Using the resistance principle or the dielectric principle, the moisture content of the wood is quickly measured by inserting probes into the interior of the wood or placing sensors close to the wood surface. High-precision models can be calibrated for different wood species, and are essential monitoring equipment on wood drying and furniture production lines.
Mechanical property testing machine: Including universal material testing machines and furniture strength testing machines. Static load, dynamic load, fatigue, bending and compression tests can be carried out on furniture components or the whole piece. Through sensors and software, the force, displacement and deformation curves are recorded in real time to precisely evaluate the structural performance.
Climate chamber system: Key equipment for formaldehyde emission testing. It is composed of a chamber body, a temperature and humidity control system, an air circulation and purification system and a sampling system. The environmental parameters in the chamber are required to be precisely controlled and the background formaldehyde concentration extremely low, to ensure the accuracy and reliability of the test results.
Spectrophotometer: Used to analyze the formaldehyde concentration in the absorption solution in formaldehyde testing. The principle is that formaldehyde reacts with the acetylacetone reagent in an acetic acid-ammonium acetate buffer solution to generate a yellow compound, which has maximum absorption at a wavelength of 412 nm, and the formaldehyde content is calculated by measuring the absorbance.
Atomic absorption spectrometer: A high-sensitivity analytical instrument for heavy metal content testing. It is composed of a light source, an atomizer, a spectroscopic system and a detection system. It can detect heavy metal elements at the ppm (parts per million) or even ppb (parts per billion) level, and is the equipment for chemical safety indicator testing.
Precision dimensional measuring tools: Including high-precision vernier calipers, digital micrometers, laser rangefinders, granite surface plates, try squares, feeler gauges and spirit levels. They are used to precisely measure the linear dimensions, angles, flatness, straightness and parallelism and other geometric tolerances of the furniture, ensuring processing and assembly accuracy.
Coating performance testing instruments: A general term for a series of dedicated instruments, such as paint film adhesion cross-cut testers, paint film abrasion testers, impact testers, gloss meters, coating thickness gauges and cross-cut knives. They are used to comprehensively evaluate the physical and mechanical properties and chemical resistance of the furniture surface coating.
