Wooden pallet inspection mainly conducts scientific testing and analysis on dimensional and tolerance testing, appearance and processing quality inspection, static load test, dynamic load test, bending strength test and stacking performance test, objectively assessing the product quality grade and issuing a detailed test report, providing a basis for manufacturers' quality control and downstream users' product acceptance.
Testing Items
Dimensional and tolerance testing: This test item aims to verify whether the overall dimensions of the wooden pallet and the key structural dimensions (such as deck board thickness, stringer height, and fork opening height and width) meet the tolerance requirements of the design drawings or relevant standards. High-precision tape measures and calipers are used for measurement, recording the length, width, diagonal difference and the thickness of key components, to ensure that they meet the compatibility requirements of logistics equipment and stacking stability.
Appearance and processing quality inspection: A comprehensive visual and tactile inspection is carried out on the wooden pallet to evaluate its appearance defects. The key inspection items include: whether there are dead knots, live knots, cracks, decay and wormholes affecting structural strength; whether the specification, model, nailing pattern and driving depth of the nails are correct; and whether there are unremoved burrs, splits or sharp edges, to ensure operational safety and avoid damaging goods or causing personal injury.
Static load test: This test is used to evaluate the load-bearing capacity and deformation of the wooden pallet under static uniform load. A load of a specified mass (usually standard weights or uniformly distributed heavy objects) is smoothly applied to the deck boards of the pallet and kept for a specified time (usually more than 24 hours). After the test, the deflection deformation is measured, and it is checked whether there are deck board fracture, nail loosening or yielding phenomena, to verify its reliability for long-term stacking storage.
Dynamic load test: Simulates the load-bearing performance of the wooden pallet under dynamic working conditions such as handling and transportation. Forklifts are usually used for repeated lifting and handling operations, or a dedicated testing machine is used to simulate a certain number of drops and impacts. It is checked whether the structure of the pallet remains intact under dynamic loads and whether the connections are firm, evaluating its durability in the actual logistics cycle.
Bending strength test: This test mainly targets the key load-bearing member of the pallet — the stringer. The pallet stringer is simply supported, and a concentrated load is applied at the mid-span until failure, recording the maximum load value and failure mode. This data is the core indicator for measuring the rationality of the pallet structural design and the mechanical properties of the wood, directly related to the rated load-bearing capacity of the pallet.
Stacking performance test: Evaluates the stability of fully loaded wooden pallets in multi-layer stacking. Multiple pallets loaded with the rated load are stacked vertically and kept for a certain time under specified temperature and humidity conditions. It is checked whether the lower pallets undergo excessive deformation, structural failure or cause stacking instability, ensuring their safety in the warehousing link.
Testing Scope
Wooden pallets of various structural forms: The inspection scope covers the mainstream structures in the market, including double-face entry, four-way entry, single-face use and double-face use and other forms. For pallets with different entry methods, special attention needs to be paid to their fork opening dimensions, reinforcement board settings and the strength tests of the corresponding parts, ensuring that all designs can meet the use requirements.
Pallets of different wood raw materials: The testing objects include pallets made from different wood species such as pine, fir, poplar and mixed hardwood. According to the density, hardness, natural defects and other characteristics of the wood, the raw material type needs to be noted in the inspection report, and its influence on the overall performance of the pallet (such as strength, nail holding power and durability) evaluated.
Pallets of different age conditions: The inspection scope is not limited to new factory pallets, but also includes old pallets in service or repaired and refurbished pallets. The inspection of old pallets needs to focus on their wear and aging degree, such as the worn thickness of deck boards, the corrosion condition of nails, the change of wood moisture content and whether there is new biological attack.
Heat treatment (ISPM-15) compliance inspection: For wooden pallets used in international logistics, the inspection scope must include whether they comply with the ISPM-15 standard. It is necessary to verify the operation records of the heat treatment kiln, and verify the effectiveness of the heat treatment process through wood moisture content testing, core temperature monitoring records or officially certified marks (such as the IPPC mark), to prove that pests have been killed.
Pallets with special process treatment: Including wooden pallets treated with special processes such as drying, preservation and flame retardancy. The inspection scope needs to extend to the effect verification of these processes, such as testing the preservative loading and penetration depth, or testing the combustion performance after flame-retardant treatment, to ensure that they meet the additional requirements of specific application scenarios.
Customized non-standard pallets: For non-standard wooden pallets with special requirements for dimensions, structure and load-bearing capacity, the inspection scope needs to be completely carried out in accordance with the customer's technical agreement or customized drawings. All test items and methods need to be adjusted and explained according to their unique design, ensuring the validity of the inspection conclusions for their specific uses.
Testing Methods
Measurement method: Metrologically calibrated steel tape measures, vernier calipers, angle gauges and other measuring tools are used to directly measure the various dimensions of the pallet in accordance with standards such as GB/T 4996 "Flat pallets for through transit of goods — Test methods" or ISO 8611. During measurement, representative points need to be selected, multiple measurements taken and the average value calculated, and the maximum deviation value recorded, ensuring that the data is objective and accurate.
Visual and tactile inspection method: Under sufficient lighting conditions, the inspector carries out a systematic visual inspection of the six surfaces of the pallet, combined with touching to perceive the surface roughness, burrs and looseness of the wood. This method is carried out in accordance with the classification and limit requirements for defects in GB/T 31148 "Flat pallets for through transit of goods — Performance requirements and selection of tests", carrying out qualitative or semi-quantitative evaluation of various appearance defects and recording them.
Static load test method: According to the standard provisions, the pallet is placed horizontally on a firm and flat ground, and a uniformly distributed load (usually sandbags or dedicated weights) is slowly applied to 1.25 times the rated load or higher through loading plates. After loading, a dial indicator is set at the mid-span position to measure the initial and stabilized deflection, and the permanent deformation and elastic deformation are calculated to evaluate its deformation resistance.
Dynamic load test method: Common methods include forklift lifting and handling tests and drop tests. The forklift test requires the use of a forklift complying with the standard to carry out operation cycles such as lifting, traveling, turning, braking and lowering at the specified speed. In the drop test, the pallet loaded with the rated load is lifted to a specified height and allowed to fall freely onto a hard horizontal surface, checking whether its structural integrity is damaged.
Bending test method: Carried out on a universal material testing machine or a dedicated compression testing machine. The pallet stringer or the whole pallet (in the form of a simply supported beam) is supported on two supports, and a pressure is applied at a uniform speed at the middle position between the two support points through a loading head until the specimen fails. The testing machine automatically records the load-deformation curve, thereby calculating key mechanical parameters such as bending strength and modulus of elasticity.
Stacking test method: At least three fully loaded pallets of the same batch are stacked vertically and aligned, with an additional load applied on the top layer (usually 0.25 times the rated load or as specified in the standard), and kept for at least 24 hours under specified temperature and humidity conditions. After the test, it is checked whether the structure of the lower pallets has yielded, collapsed or excessively deformed.

Testing Instruments and Equipment
Precision dimensional measuring equipment: Mainly including digital vernier calipers (accuracy 0.01 mm), large digital height gauges, steel tape measures (grade II accuracy or above) and surface plates. For dimensions such as the diagonals of large pallets, laser rangefinders need to be used to ensure accuracy and efficiency. All measuring tools must be regularly calibrated and accompanied by valid calibration certificates.
Mechanical property testing machine: The core equipment is a computer-controlled electronic universal testing machine, with the range needing to cover the expected maximum failure load (usually 50 kN to 200 kN). The equipment is equipped with dedicated bending test fixtures and compression test platens, can precisely control the loading rate, and automatically collect and process data such as load, displacement and deformation, generating test curves.
Environmental simulation and loading equipment: Including constant temperature and humidity chambers for simulating different warehousing environments for stacking tests; standard weights or calibrated sandbags/water bags for applying static loads; and dedicated dynamic test benches or programmable lifting drop test machines for simulating vibration and impact loads during transportation.
Moisture content meter: A pin-type resistance moisture meter is usually used. The probes are inserted into the interior of the wood (generally at the center of the member), and the moisture content value is indirectly obtained by measuring the wood resistance. For cases requiring precise measurement, the oven-drying and weighing method (arbitration method) can be adopted, using a balance with an accuracy of 0.01 g and a forced-air drying oven.
Auxiliary tools for appearance and defect inspection: Including high-intensity LED inspection lights, magnifiers, crack width comparison cards and tapping hammers (for checking internal voids or looseness). For the inspection of heat treatment marks, an ultraviolet lamp may need to be used to verify the authenticity of the IPPC mark, or a temperature recorder may be used to read the temperature curve data of the heat treatment process.
Data recording and processing system: Covering industrial cameras or high-definition scanners (for recording appearance conditions), portable data collectors (for on-site recording of various measurement data) and professional inspection report generation and management software. These devices ensure the traceability of the inspection process, the accuracy of the data and the standardization of the report format.
