Plywood inspection mainly conducts scientific testing and analysis on appearance quality inspection, specification dimension deviation determination, physical property testing, formaldehyde emission determination, mechanical property inspection and durability and special performance testing, objectively assessing the product quality grade and issuing a detailed test report, providing a basis for manufacturers' quality control and downstream users' product acceptance.
Testing Items
Appearance quality inspection: Mainly inspects the material defects, processing defects and surface treatment conditions of the face, back and core veneers of the plywood. Specifically, it includes: knots, discoloration, decay, cracks and joint gaps of the face veneer; overlapping, gaps and holes of the core veneer; and the sanding quality, indentations, contamination and edge damage of the surface. This inspection is the basic basis for judging the grade and commercial value of the plywood.
Specification dimension deviation determination: In accordance with relevant standards, the panel dimensions (length and width), thickness, perpendicularity (edge straightness) and squareness (right angle deviation) of the plywood are precisely measured. The thickness deviation is the core indicator. Measurements need to be taken at multiple points at the midpoints of the four edges and the center of the board, calculating the average value and deviation, directly affecting the subsequent processing and assembly accuracy of the board.
Physical property testing: Including moisture content determination and density determination. The moisture content test usually adopts the oven-drying method, drying the specimen in an oven at 103 ℃ to constant weight and calculating its moisture content, with the control range usually being 6%-14% to prevent deformation in use. The density determination is calculated by measuring the mass and volume of the specimen, reflecting the compactness and material usage of the board.
Formaldehyde emission determination: This is a key mandatory test item concerning indoor environmental safety. It is mainly carried out by the 1 m³ chamber method, the desiccator method or the gas analysis method. The formaldehyde concentration released into the air by the board under specific temperature and humidity conditions is determined, and the environmental grade (such as E0 grade, E1 grade and CARB certification grade) is determined according to the results.
Mechanical property inspection: Core items for evaluating the load-bearing capacity of plywood as a structural material. This mainly includes modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity tests, reflecting the ability of the board to resist bending deformation; internal bond strength (bonding strength) tests, checking the firmness of the bond between the veneers of each layer; and surface bonding strength tests, evaluating the bonding force between the surfacing layer and the substrate.
Durability and special performance testing: Carried out for plywood with special uses. For example, its water resistance and weather resistance are evaluated through boiling water or cyclic tests; for flame-retardant plywood, combustion performance tests (such as oxygen index and smoke density) need to be carried out; for preservative-treated plywood, the preservative retention and decay prevention effectiveness need to be inspected.
Testing Scope
General-purpose plywood: Applies to general plywood used in indoor normal environments, such as furniture back panels, packing boxes and building formwork. The testing focus is on appearance quality, specification dimensions, moisture content, basic mechanical properties and formaldehyde emission, which need to meet the basic requirements of national standards such as GB/T 9846 "Plywood for general use".
Decorative veneer surfaced plywood: Refers to plywood with thin wood of precious tree species (veneer) applied on the surface, widely used in furniture and interior decoration. In addition to conventional items, testing particularly emphasizes the appearance quality of the decorative veneer (such as grain and color difference), surface bonding strength, resistance to hot and cold cycling, scratch resistance, stain resistance and surface abrasion resistance.
Special functional plywood: Including flame-retardant plywood, preservative and insect-resistant plywood, and moisture/water-resistant plywood (such as Class I plywood). The inspection scope needs to be extended to the claimed special functions, such as flame-retardant performance requiring burning grade evaluation in accordance with GB 8624; preservative-treated materials requiring the inspection of preservative penetration and retention.
Structural plywood: Used for load-bearing structures, such as wall studs, floor panels and roof panels of timber structures. Its testing requirements are the most stringent, with the core being mechanical properties (modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and shear strength) and durability (strength retention after dry and wet state cycling), which need to comply with GB/T 22349 "Structural plywood" or relevant international standards such as ASTM D5456.
Import and export trade plywood: In the import and export link, the inspection report is an important document for customs clearance and settlement. In addition to meeting Chinese standards, the inspection scope also needs to comply with the mandatory regulations and standards of the destination country or region, such as the CARB regulations of the United States, the CE certification of the EU (including formaldehyde emission and mechanical properties), and the JIS standards of Japan.
Production process quality control: The internal quality control testing of plywood production enterprises covers the whole process from veneer (rotary cutting or planing), gluing, assembly, hot pressing to sanding and grading. The test items are more targeted, such as veneer thickness uniformity, adhesive application amount, monitoring of hot pressing process parameters (temperature, pressure and time) and online spot checks of finished products.
Testing Methods
Sensory inspection method: Mainly used for appearance quality inspection. Under certain lighting conditions (such as under a 40 W fluorescent lamp at a distance of 0.5-1.0 m), inspectors judge and grade the material defects, processing defects and surface treatment quality of the board by visual inspection and hand touch, against standard samples or textual descriptions. This method requires inspectors to have rich experience.
Instrument measurement method: Used for specification dimension and physical property determination. Vernier calipers and micrometers are used to measure thickness; steel tape measures and steel rulers to measure length, width and edge straightness; moisture meters (resistance type or dielectric type) to quickly determine the moisture content, or the oven method as the arbitration method; and balances and calipers to obtain the density by calculation.
Mechanical testing machine test method: The universal material testing machine is the core equipment for mechanical property testing. Specimens of specified dimensions are prepared in accordance with standards such as GB/T 17657, loaded at a constant rate on the testing machine, and three-point bending tests (for modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity) and tensile tests (for internal bond strength) are carried out respectively, with the load-displacement curve automatically recorded by the system and the results calculated.
Chamber method and desiccator method: Used for formaldehyde emission testing. The 1 m³ chamber method is the reference method. The specimen is placed in a sealed climate chamber with strictly controlled temperature, humidity and air exchange rate, and the air in the chamber is regularly extracted and the formaldehyde concentration analyzed by methods such as the acetylacetone spectrophotometric method. The desiccator method is relatively simple: the specimen is placed in a desiccator, and after absorbing the released formaldehyde, titration analysis is carried out.
Environmental simulation test method: Used to evaluate durability. For example, in the water resistance test, the specimen is soaked in boiling water for a certain time, then dried in air at (63±3) ℃, and after repeating this cycle several times, its mechanical strength retention rate and whether phenomena such as glue opening and delamination occur are tested. For the weather resistance test, a xenon arc aging test chamber may be used to simulate the influence of sunlight and rain.
Chemical analysis method: Used to analyze the chemical composition of the plywood, such as using titration methods and spectroscopic analysis methods to determine the retention of preservatives (such as copper, chromium and arsenic) in preservative-treated materials; or carrying out qualitative or quantitative analysis of the adhesive type to verify the claimed environmental characteristics of the product (such as whether it is formaldehyde-free added).

For production quality control, online laser thickness gauges and panel scanning systems may also be used for continuous monitoring.
Constant temperature forced-air drying oven and electronic balance: Used for physical property tests such as moisture content and density. The temperature range of the drying oven needs to cover 103 ℃±2 ℃, with a forced-air function to ensure uniform temperature in the oven. The accuracy of the electronic balance is required to be at least 0.01 g, for precise weighing of the specimen mass before and after drying.
Spectrophotometer and supporting chemical analysis equipment: Used for quantitative analysis of chemical items such as formaldehyde emission (acetylacetone method) and preservative content. The spectrophotometer needs to have good stability at a specific wavelength (such as 412 nm). Supporting equipment includes constant temperature water baths, shakers, micro burettes and common laboratory glassware of various specifications such as volumetric flasks and pipettes.
Environmental simulation and durability testing equipment: Including boiling water devices, constant temperature water baths (for water resistance tests), xenon arc aging test chambers or UV aging chambers (for weather resistance tests), as well as cone calorimeters and oxygen index meters (for flame retardancy tests). These devices can simulate harsh service environments and evaluate the long-term performance of the product.
