High density fiberboard (HDF) testing items and standards mainly conduct scientific testing and analysis on formaldehyde emission, modulus of rupture, internal bond strength, water absorption thickness swelling, density and surface bonding strength, objectively assessing the product quality grade and issuing a detailed test report, providing a basis for manufacturers' quality control and downstream users' product acceptance.

Testing Items

Formaldehyde emission: This is the most core environmental and safety testing item of high density fiberboard (HDF), directly related to whether the product causes harm to human health. Testing is carried out in accordance with the national standard GB 18580-2025 "Indoor decorating and refurbishing materials — Limit of formaldehyde emission of wood-based panels and finishing products", mainly adopting the 1 m³ chamber method to simulate indoor environmental conditions and determine the mass of formaldehyde released per unit area and unit time of the board, with the limit value of 0.124 mg/m³.

Modulus of rupture: This indicator is used to evaluate the ability of the HDF to resist bending loads without fracture, directly reflecting its mechanical properties as a load-bearing structure or substrate. During the test, the two ends of a specimen of specified dimensions are supported, a load is applied in the middle until failure, the maximum load value is recorded and its strength is calculated. It is a key parameter for measuring the toughness and load-bearing capacity of the board.

Internal bond strength: Also known as internal bonding strength, it is an important indicator for measuring the firmness of the bond between the fibers inside the HDF. By applying a vertical tensile force in the thickness direction of the specimen, the maximum stress at the failure of the internal structure is determined. If this indicator is unqualified, problems such as delamination and blistering tend to occur in the subsequent processing or use of the board.

Water absorption thickness swelling: This test is used to evaluate the dimensional stability of the HDF in humid environments. After the specimen is completely immersed in water for a certain time (usually 24 hours), the expansion percentage in the thickness direction is measured. A lower swelling rate indicates better moisture resistance of the board and higher application reliability in humid environments such as kitchens and bathrooms.

Density: A basic physical property indicator of HDF, referring to the mass of the board per unit volume, usually required to be not less than 0.80 g/cm³. The uniformity of density is the basis for ensuring the consistency of other physical and mechanical properties of the board. Through multi-point sampling, weighing and measurement, the uniformity of forming and pressing in the board production process can be evaluated.

Surface bonding strength: This item mainly evaluates the firmness of the bond between the surface decorative layer (such as melamine-impregnated paper, PVC and veneer) and the substrate of the HDF. By fixing a pull head on the board surface with a specific adhesive and carrying out a vertical pull-out test, the force required for the decorative layer to be peeled off is determined, to judge the quality of the surfacing process.

Screw holding power: Used to evaluate the ability of the HDF to hold fixing connectors (such as screws), and is an important indicator for measuring its practicality as an assembly material for furniture and cabinets. During the test, a screw of a specified specification is screwed into the board to a specified depth, and then a tensile testing machine is used to pull the screw out vertically, recording the maximum tensile force required.

Testing Scope

General type high density fiberboard: Mainly tests its basic physical and mechanical properties and formaldehyde emission, applicable to indoor dry environments with low moisture resistance requirements, such as the back panels of ordinary furniture and drawer bottom boards and other non-load-bearing or non-exposed parts.

Moisture-resistant high density fiberboard: On the basis of the general type test items, it is necessary to strengthen the testing of indicators such as water absorption thickness swelling and wet-state internal bond strength, and carry out performance tests under cyclic humid conditions according to the standard, ensuring that it is suitable for environments that may contact humid air such as kitchen and bathroom cabinets.

Load-bearing high density fiberboard: For boards used for load-bearing purposes such as flooring substrates and tabletop lining boards, the testing scope needs to focus on mechanical indicators such as modulus of rupture, modulus of elasticity and impact resistance, evaluating their structural stability and deformation resistance under long-term loads.

Specially surfaced boards: For HDF with special treatments such as fire resistance, mold resistance and antibacterial properties, the testing scope needs to be extended to the corresponding functional indicators. For example, fireproof boards need the burning performance grade determination in accordance with GB 8624; mold-resistant boards need anti-mold performance testing.

Import and export trade boards: The testing scope is determined according to the regulatory requirements of the target market. For export to the EU, it needs to comply with the relevant standards of CE certification (such as EN 622-5) and meet the restrictions of the REACH regulation on chemical substances; for export to the United States, reference needs to be made to the ASTM D1037 standard series and the CARB regulation limits on formaldehyde.

Customized dimension and thickness boards: For HDF with non-standard dimensions or special thicknesses, the specimen sampling method needs to be adjusted according to the relevant standards during testing, and the density gradient in the thickness direction and the uniformity of the cross-section structure need to be evaluated, ensuring the consistency of the whole board performance.

Testing Methods

1 m³ chamber method: This is currently the arbitration method for determining formaldehyde emission. A specimen with a surface area of 1 m² is placed in a climate chamber with strictly controlled temperature, humidity and air exchange rate. After continuous operation to a stable state, the air in the chamber is collected and the formaldehyde concentration is analyzed by the acetylacetone spectrophotometric method or high-performance liquid chromatography. The results are scientific, accurate and reproducible.

Three-point bending test method: A standard method for determining the modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity. A rectangular specimen is placed on two support rollers, and a load is applied at a uniform speed through a loading roller above the midpoint of the two support rollers. The load-deflection curve is recorded through sensors, and the modulus of rupture and modulus of elasticity are calculated through formulas. It is the core method for evaluating the bending resistance of the board.

Internal bond strength determination method: Carried out with a universal material testing machine and dedicated fixtures. The two sides of a specimen of a specific size are bonded to metal blocks with high-strength hot-melt adhesive. After curing, it is placed on the testing machine and stretched at a uniform speed in the direction perpendicular to the board surface until the interior of the specimen fails. The maximum tensile force is recorded and the strength value is calculated.

Water immersion method for thickness swelling: After measuring the original thickness, the specimen is completely immersed in distilled water at (20±1) ℃. After soaking for (24±1) hours, it is taken out, the surface water is wiped off, and the thickness is measured again within the specified time. The percentage of the thickness increase relative to the original thickness is calculated, to evaluate the water resistance of the board.

Density gradient determination method: Not only the overall average density is measured, but more importantly, the density distribution of the board in the thickness direction is analyzed. The continuous slicing and weighing method or a density gradient instrument is usually used. By testing the density gradient, the rationality of the hot pressing process and whether the board has defects such as loose surface layers or over-dense core layers can be judged.

Surface bonding strength determination method: A dedicated pull head is used, which is vertically bonded to the board decorative surface with a high-strength quick-curing adhesive (such as epoxy resin). After curing, a tensile testing machine is used to pull vertically at a constant rate, recording the maximum tensile force when the decorative layer separates from the substrate, and the failure interface is observed to judge the failure mode.

Testing Instruments and Equipment

1 m³ formaldehyde climate chamber system: Composed of a high-precision temperature and humidity control unit, an air circulation and exchange unit, an air sampling unit and a background formaldehyde purification unit. The inner wall of the chamber is made of inert, low-adsorption materials, and can precisely simulate the indoor environment. It is the core equipment for obtaining formaldehyde emission data.

Electronic universal material testing machine: Equipped with various accessories such as three-point bending fixtures, tensile fixtures and compression fixtures, it is used to complete most mechanical property tests such as modulus of rupture, internal bond strength, modulus of elasticity and screw holding power. Its high-precision sensors and computer control system can collect and process load and displacement data in real time.

Spectrophotometer / high-performance liquid chromatograph: Used for quantitative analysis in formaldehyde emission testing. The spectrophotometer (commonly the acetylacetone method) is simple to operate and has a lower cost; the high-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC) has higher analysis precision and stronger anti-interference ability, suitable for the precise analysis of samples with complex backgrounds.

Constant temperature and humidity water bath and thickness measuring instrument: The water bath needs to have a precise temperature control function to ensure a constant soaking water temperature. The thickness measuring instrument usually adopts a dial gauge or a digital micrometer, and the measuring head diameter and applied pressure need to comply with the standard provisions, to ensure the accuracy of the thickness data before and after water absorption.

Electronic balance and density determination device: A high-precision electronic balance (accuracy at least 0.01 g) is used to weigh the specimen mass. Density determination may involve vernier calipers to measure the volume, or the use of an immersion device based on the Archimedes principle, to precisely calculate the density of the board and its uniformity.

Environmental test chamber: Used for functional tests such as moisture-resistant boards and fireproof boards. For example, a programmable constant temperature and humidity chamber is used to simulate damp heat cycling environments; a small combustion test furnace is used to evaluate the combustion performance of materials. These devices provide conditions for the performance verification of the board in specific environments.
