Glass fibre rope testing mainly conducts scientific testing and analysis on mechanical property testing, linear density and diameter testing, twist and structural stability testing, thermal properties and temperature resistance testing, chemical corrosion resistance testing, and appearance and surface quality testing, objectively assessing the product quality grade and issuing a detailed test report, providing a basis for manufacturers' quality control and downstream users' product acceptance.
Testing Items
Mechanical property testing: Mainly including the determination of breaking strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity and elongation at specified load. These indicators directly reflect the load-bearing capacity and deformation characteristics of the glass fibre rope, and are the core basis for evaluating its suitability as a load-bearing, binding or reinforcing material, usually completed on a universal material testing machine.
Linear density and diameter testing: The linear density refers to the mass of the rope per unit length, usually expressed in tex or metric count. The diameter is measured with a dedicated measuring instrument under no tension or specified tension. These two parameters are the basic data for controlling the product specification, calculating the specific strength and carrying out structural design, and are crucial for subsequent processing and application.
Twist and structural stability testing: The test items include the twist direction (S twist or Z twist), twist pitch and the structural recovery ability after untwisting. The twist directly affects the softness, abrasion resistance and kink resistance of the rope. The structural stability test aims to evaluate whether the rope is easy to loosen or deform under load or environmental changes.
Thermal properties and temperature resistance testing: Mainly including the glass transition temperature, thermal shrinkage, strength retention rate at the ultimate working temperature and thermogravimetric analysis. Glass fibre rope is often used in high-temperature environments (such as thermal insulation and fire protection fields), and its thermal stability is the key indicator determining the service life and safety.
Chemical corrosion resistance testing: After soaking the rope sample in chemical media such as acids, alkalis and salts of specific concentrations for a certain time, its appearance change, mass loss and residual strength are tested. This item evaluates the durability of the material in corrosive environments such as chemical and marine fields, and is an important reference for material selection.
Appearance and surface quality testing: Checking whether there are defects such as broken strands, fluff, uneven knots, stains, oil stains and colour differences on the rope surface by visual inspection or with magnifying equipment. The appearance quality not only affects the aesthetics of the product, but may also become a potential performance weak point.
Testing Scope
Glass fibre rope for electrical insulation: Mainly used for insulation binding and padding of electrical equipment such as motors and transformers. Testing focuses on the electrical strength, dielectric loss factor, arc resistance and long-term stability under high voltage, ensuring its safety and reliability in high-voltage electric fields.
Glass fibre rope for thermal insulation and sealing: Widely used in industrial kilns, pipeline insulation and high-temperature equipment sealing. The testing focus is on the thermal conductivity, dimensional stability at high temperatures, compression recovery rate and resistance to gas flow erosion, to meet the thermal insulation and sealing requirements under long-term high-temperature working conditions.
Glass fibre rope for reinforcement and composites: Embedded in the resin matrix as a reinforcing material to manufacture composite components. The testing scope includes the wettability with the resin, the interfacial bonding strength, the dispersion uniformity in the composite material and the improvement effect on the mechanical properties of the final product.
Glass fibre rope for binding and load-bearing: Used for binding cables, fixing objects or light lifting. The testing core is the breaking strength, abrasion resistance, ultraviolet aging resistance and fatigue strength after repeated bending, ensuring its safe use under dynamic loads.
Glass fibre rope with special functions: Including glass fibre rope coated with rubber, silicone, polytetrafluoroethylene and other materials, or varieties with special surface treatments. According to its functional characteristics, targeted items such as the adhesion of the coating layer, resistance to specific media and flame retardancy grade (such as the oxygen index) need to be added.
Different specifications and yarn types: Testing needs to cover various glass fibre ropes of different diameters (such as from 1 mm to above 20 mm), different numbers of plies and made of different original filaments (such as E-glass, S-glass and high-strength high-modulus glass), ensuring that the standards apply to the full series of products.
Testing Methods
Tensile property test (referring to GB/T 7689.5, ISO 3341 and ASTM D2970): A constant rate of extension (CRE) tensile testing machine is used. A specimen of a specified length is prepared, clamped in the fixtures, and stretched at a constant rate until breakage. The maximum force (breaking strength) and the corresponding elongation are recorded, and the elongation at break and modulus of elasticity are calculated. During the test, attention needs to be paid to the clamping method to prevent the specimen from breaking at the jaws.
Twist determination (referring to GB/T 7690.3 and ISO 1890): A twist testing machine is used, adopting the untwist-retwist method or the direct counting method. One end of the specimen of a known length is fixed, and the other end is rotated until the strands are completely parallel. The number of rotations is recorded, and the twist (turns/metre) is calculated in combination with the specimen length. This method can accurately evaluate the degree of twisting and structural uniformity of the rope.
Thermal property analysis (referring to GB/T 9979 and ASTM E831): For the thermal shrinkage test, the specimen is usually placed in an oven at a specified high temperature (such as 600 ℃) for a specific time, and after cooling, the length change is measured. Thermogravimetry (TG) and the glass transition temperature (Tg) are analyzed using a thermogravimetric analyzer and a differential scanning calorimeter under programmed temperature control, analyzing the thermal stability and phase transition behavior of the material.
Chemical resistance test (referring to GB/T 3857 and ISO 175): The specimen is completely immersed in a chemical reagent of a selected concentration (such as a 10% NaOH solution or a 10% H₂SO₄ solution) and soaked at a specified temperature and time (such as 23 ℃ for 168 hours). After taking it out, cleaning and drying, its corrosion resistance is evaluated by comparing the mass change and the mechanical property retention rate before and after soaking.
Appearance and dimension measurement: The diameter is measured with a non-contact optical projector or a micrometer with a specified pressure foot, taking the average value of measurements at multiple positions of the specimen. The appearance inspection is carried out by trained inspectors under lighting conditions with an illuminance of not less than 750 lx, by visual inspection or comparison with standard samples, recording the types and quantities of various defects.
Combustion performance test (referring to GB/T 5454 and ISO 4589): An oxygen index meter is used. The vertically clamped specimen is ignited at the top, and the minimum oxygen concentration (oxygen index, LOI) required to maintain candle-like combustion in a nitrogen-oxygen mixed gas flow is measured. This indicator is a key parameter for evaluating the flame retardancy of glass fibre rope and its coating.

Testing Instruments and Equipment
Universal material testing machine: The core equipment for mechanical tests such as tension, compression and bending. It should be equipped with dedicated fixtures suitable for rope products (such as self-tightening wedge fixtures and wrapping fixtures), and have a high-precision force sensor and displacement measurement system. The data acquisition frequency needs to meet the standard requirements, to accurately draw the stress-strain curve.
Twist tester and yarn length measuring instrument: The twist tester is used to precisely measure and untwist the twist of yarns or ropes, usually with a pre-tensioning device and a digital counter. The yarn length measuring instrument is used to wind a specimen of a specified length under standard tension, to precisely determine the linear density. It is the basic equipment for controlling the consistency of the product specification.
Thermal analysis instruments: Mainly including the thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). TGA is used to measure the change of the material mass with temperature or time, and analyze the thermal decomposition temperature and composition; DSC is used to measure the heat absorbed or released by the material under programmed temperature control, and determine thermodynamic parameters such as the glass transition temperature and melting point.
Environmental test chambers: Including high-temperature ovens, constant temperature and humidity chambers, salt spray test chambers and chemical immersion devices. They are used to simulate the environmental conditions that the product may encounter in actual use, such as high temperature, damp heat, salt spray corrosion and chemical medium erosion, and assess its long-term durability and performance stability.
Optical measurement and observation equipment: A tool microscope or projector is used to precisely measure micro dimensions such as the diameter and twist pitch of the rope. A stereomicroscope is used to magnify and observe the surface morphology, fracture morphology and defects of the rope. A standard light source color assessment cabinet provides a uniform and stable lighting environment for the comparison of the appearance colour.
Combustion performance testing equipment: The oxygen index meter is the main equipment, composed of a transparent combustion tube, specimen holder, gas flow control system and igniter. In addition, according to different flame retardancy standards, vertical and horizontal burning testers, cone calorimeters and other equipment may also be needed, to comprehensively evaluate the combustion behavior and fire hazard of the material.
