First aid kit testing mainly conducts scientific testing and analysis on appearance and structural integrity testing, material biocompatibility testing, sterile barrier system integrity testing, drug validity and stability testing, instrument function and performance testing, and checklist conformity and configuration completeness testing, objectively assessing the product quality grade and issuing a detailed test report, providing a basis for manufacturers' quality control and downstream users' product acceptance.
Testing Items
Appearance and structural integrity testing: Checks whether there are scratches, deformation or damage on the first aid kit case or packaging, and whether components such as locks, zippers and handles function normally. Its sealing performance is evaluated, ensuring effective dustproofing and moisture resistance during transportation and storage, and maintaining the sterile state of the internal items.
Material biocompatibility testing: The substrates of items in the first aid kit that directly contact wounds, such as gauze, bandages and adhesive bandages, are tested. In accordance with the relevant medical device standards, their cytotoxicity, skin sensitization and irritation reactions are evaluated, ensuring that the materials are safe and do not cause allergies or adverse reactions.
Sterile barrier system integrity testing: Consumables with sterile packaging (such as sterile gauze and scalpel blades) are tested. Common methods include the dye penetration method, bubble method or microbial challenge method, verifying that the packaging can maintain its integrity within the validity period and under specific environmental conditions, preventing microbial intrusion.
Drug validity and stability testing: Checks the production date, validity period and storage conditions of the drugs in the kit (such as disinfectants and painkillers). Through visual inspection of the clarity of the liquid, the presence of precipitation and the integrity of the packaging, whether the chemical stability and effectiveness of the drugs in the storage environment of the first aid kit meet the requirements is evaluated.
Instrument function and performance testing: Functional verification is carried out on the instruments in the first aid kit. For example, the shearing force and sharpness of the scissors are tested, whether the locking and release functions of the tourniquet (such as the buckle type) are smooth and reliable is checked, and whether the measurement accuracy of the thermometer is within the specified error range is evaluated.
Checklist conformity and configuration completeness testing: In accordance with the configuration checklist declared by the product or the relevant standards (such as GB/T 27906-2011), the type, specification and quantity of the items in the kit are checked one by one. It ensures that there is no missing or wrong configuration, all components are within the validity period and function well, meeting the requirements of the preset first aid scenarios.
Testing Scope
Civil and household first aid kits: For daily emergencies in ordinary households, offices and vehicles. The testing focus is on the basic nature of the configuration, the simplicity of the operation and the general safety of the materials. It usually covers the compliance of basic items such as adhesive bandages, gauze, triangular bandages, disinfectant wipes, tweezers and scissors.
Outdoor sports and adventure first aid kits: Suitable for professional or extreme environments such as mountaineering, hiking and sailing. The testing scope needs to be extended to the weather resistance (such as waterproofness and compression resistance) and lightweight design of the items, and to evaluate whether specialized drugs and instruments for special scenarios such as low temperature, plateau and drowning are included.
Vehicle first aid kits: Tested in accordance with the requirements of the national or industry regulations on the provision of first aid kits in motor vehicles. In addition to conventional items, its stability under vehicle vibration and high and low temperature cycling environments, as well as the effectiveness of vehicle-specific tools such as reflective markings and window breakers, need to be examined.
Industrial and enterprise first aid kits: Configured for the occupational injury risks of specific workplaces such as factories and construction sites. In accordance with the relevant industry safety specifications, testing needs to evaluate whether they are equipped with sufficient professional treatment supplies such as burn dressings, chemical burn flushing solution and fracture fixation splints.
Military and tactical first aid kits: Serving professional fields such as the military, police and rescue. The testing standards are extremely strict, and the scope covers the flame retardancy of the materials, camouflage performance, reliability under extreme temperature and humidity and electromagnetic environments, and the immediate effectiveness of tactical life-saving equipment such as tourniquets and chest decompression needles.
Internationally certified first aid kits: For export products or products that comply with international standards (such as CE, FDA and ISO). The testing scope needs to fully cover the regulatory directives of the target market, such as the requirements of the EU Medical Device Regulation (MDR) for sterile devices, or the provisions of the United States Pharmacopeia (USP) for drug packaging.
Testing Methods
Visual inspection and dimensional measurement method: The most basic and direct testing method. Through manual or automated vision systems, the appearance defects and the legibility of the printed markings of the product are checked. Tools such as calipers and tape measures are used to measure the dressing dimensions and instrument specifications, ensuring that they conform to the nominal values and the tolerance ranges of the relevant standards.
Physical property test method: Dedicated equipment is used to evaluate the mechanical properties of the materials. For example, a fabric tensile testing machine is used to test the breaking strength and elongation of bandages and triangular bandages; an abrasion testing machine is used to evaluate the abrasion resistance of the bag body fabric; drop tests are simulated to test the impact resistance of the packaging.
Chemical analysis and chromatography method: Used to detect the content of the active ingredients, impurities and stability of disinfectants. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) or gas chromatography (GC) is used to precisely analyze the concentration of specific chemical substances in the solution, ensuring that its sterilization/disinfection efficacy complies with the pharmacopoeia or product standards.
Microbiological test method: Core for verifying the sterility or microbial limit indicators. This includes sterility tests (direct inoculation method or membrane filtration method), bacterial endotoxin testing (limulus reagent method) and microbial challenge tests, to confirm the effectiveness of the sterile barrier system.
Environmental adaptability test method: The storage and use conditions that the product may experience are simulated in environmental test chambers. Tests such as high temperature and high humidity, low temperature, temperature cycling, vibration and salt spray are carried out, evaluating the performance retention ability of the whole first aid kit and the internal items under the above environmental stresses.
Accelerated aging test method: Based on the Arrhenius equation, the aging process of the material is accelerated by raising the environmental temperature, so as to predict the validity period or shelf life of the product (especially rubber and plastic components and drugs) in a relatively short time. It provides a scientific basis for determining the shelf life of the product.
Testing Standards
Domestic Standards:
1. GB/T 6682-2008, Water for analytical laboratory use — Specification and test methods
2. GB/T 19001, Quality management systems — Requirements
3. GB/T 27025, General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories
International Standards:
1. ISO 17025, General requirements for the competence of testing and calibration laboratories
Note: The applicable standard can be selected according to the product use and customer trade requirements; standards agreed in the contract take precedence over general standards.
Testing Instruments and Equipment
Universal material testing machine: Used to test the mechanical properties such as the tensile strength, tearing strength and peeling strength of the textile dressings (gauze and bandages) and plastic and rubber components in the first aid kit. It can simulate the stress conditions in actual use and quantitatively evaluate their mechanical reliability.
Constant temperature and humidity test chamber: Used for the environmental adaptability and stability testing of the product. It can precisely control the temperature and humidity in the chamber, simulate various climatic conditions from tropical to cold and from dry to humid, and check the performance changes of the first aid kit and its contents after long-term storage.
Sterility testing isolation system and microbiological incubator: Constituting the core equipment of microbiological testing. The isolation system provides a Class A aseptic operation environment to prevent exogenous contamination. The incubator is used to culture the sample at set temperatures (such as 30-35 ℃ for aerobic bacteria and 20-25 ℃ for fungi) to determine whether there is microbial contamination.
High-performance liquid chromatograph (HPLC): Used for precise qualitative and quantitative analysis of the medicinal liquids and disinfectants in the first aid kit. It can separate and determine the content of each component in complex mixtures, and is the key instrument for ensuring that the active ingredients of drugs meet the standards and the impurity content is controlled.
Packaging sealing tester: Specially used to test the integrity of sterile medical device packaging. Common ones include vacuum decay leak detectors and dye water method (dye penetration) test devices, which can sensitively detect micron-level pinholes on the packaging film or slight leaks at the seals.
Colour fastness and abrasion testing machine: Used to evaluate the colour durability of the outer case fabric and the internal textiles of the first aid kit. By simulating the effects of rubbing, light and perspiration, its colour fastness grade is checked, preventing the colours from fading and contaminating items or wounds during use or cleaning (such as reusable first aid kits).
