Stainless steel square tube inspection mainly conducts scientific testing and analysis on the key performance indicators, objectively assessing the product quality grade and issuing a detailed test report, providing a basis for manufacturers' quality control and downstream users' product acceptance.
Stainless Steel Square Tube Testing Items
Chemical composition analysis: Through the methods such as the spectrometry analysis and inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), the contents of the elements such as the chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), molybdenum (Mo) and carbon (C) in the stainless steel square tube are precisely determined. This is the basis for judging whether its designations (such as 304, 316 and 430) meet the standard requirements, directly affecting the corrosion resistance and mechanical properties of the material.
Mechanical property testing: Mainly including the tensile testing, hardness testing and impact testing. The tensile testing determines the tensile strength, yield strength and elongation after fracture; the hardness testing commonly uses the Brinell (HB), Rockwell (HRB/HRC) or Vickers (HV) methods; the impact testing evaluates the toughness of the material at the low temperatures, comprehensively evaluating the load-bearing and deformation resistance abilities of the square tube.
Dimension and shape tolerance testing: The high-precision callipers, micrometers and laser diameter measuring instruments are used to measure the side lengths, wall thicknesses, lengths, diagonal differences and straightness of the square tube. The strict dimension control is the key to ensuring that it meets the drawing requirements and the subsequent assembly precision, especially important for the structural applications.
Surface quality inspection: Under the standard light sources, the visual inspection is carried out or the surface roughness testers are used to evaluate the finish of the inner and outer surfaces of the square tube, checking whether there are the defects such as the cracks, folds, scars, scratches, rust and oxide scales. The surface quality directly affects its aesthetics, corrosion initiation points and coating adhesion.
Non-destructive testing (NDT): For the important load-bearing or safety-critical components, the non-destructive testing needs to be carried out. The common methods include the ultrasonic flaw detection (UT) for detecting the internal cracks and delaminations, eddy current flaw detection (ET) for detecting the near-surface defects, and liquid penetrant flaw detection (PT) for detecting the surface open defects, ensuring the internal integrity of the material.
Metallographic structure analysis: Through the sample preparation, grinding, polishing and etching, the microstructures of the material, such as the morphologies and grain sizes of the austenite, ferrite and martensite, and whether there are the harmful phases (such as the σ phase), are observed under a metallographic microscope. This item is used to verify whether the heat treatment process is correct and the essence of the material properties.
Corrosion resistance testing: Through the salt spray testing (NSS, ASS and CASS), intergranular corrosion testing (such as the sulphuric acid-copper sulfate method), pitting potential measurement and other methods, the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel square tube in the different corrosive environments is simulated or accelerated for evaluation. It is the core basis for verifying whether the material selection is appropriate.
Stainless Steel Square Tube Testing Scope
Austenitic stainless steel square tubes: Such as the 304, 316 and 321 series. The testing emphasis is on ensuring that the nickel and chromium contents reach the standards to maintain the stable austenitic structures, carrying out the intergranular corrosion sensitivity testing, and verifying their excellent corrosion resistance and good processing formability. Widely used in the food, chemical and building decoration fields.
Ferritic stainless steel square tubes: Such as the 430 and 409 series. The testing focuses on the chromium contents and low-carbon control, evaluating their resistance to stress corrosion cracking and magnetic characteristics. Their metallographic structures should be the uniform ferrite, and in the mechanical property testing, the yield strengths are usually higher but the toughness is relatively lower.
Martensitic stainless steel square tubes: Such as the 410 and 420 series. The testing needs to focus on the carbon contents and the hardness and strength after the heat treatments. The martensitic structures are obtained through the quenching and tempering processes, and their wear resistance and certain corrosion resistance are tested. Commonly used for the mechanical components with the high strength and hardness requirements.
Duplex stainless steel square tubes: Such as the 2205 and 2507 series. The testing core is to ensure that the austenite and ferrite two-phase ratio is close to 1:1, and strictly control the nitrogen element contents. The strict pitting and crevice corrosion testing needs to be carried out, verifying their unique properties combining the high strength and high corrosion resistance.
Welded stainless steel square tubes: In addition to the base material testing, the weld areas need to be particularly focused on. The testing items include the chemical compositions, mechanical properties (tensile and bending), non-destructive flaw detection (RT/UT) and metallographic structures of the welds and heat-affected zones, ensuring that the weld quality matches the base material without the welding defects.
Square tubes for the industrial fluid conveying: Applied to the pipeline systems of the petroleum, chemical and pharmaceutical industries. In addition to the routine items, the testing scope must emphatically carry out the hydrostatic testing or pneumatic testing to verify the pressure-bearing capacity, and carry out the strict cleanliness and passivation film quality inspections, preventing the medium pollution and corrosion.
Square tubes for the building structure decoration: Used for the curtain walls, railings and roofs. The testing pays more attention to the dimension precision, surface finish, colour uniformity and weather resistance (such as the salt spray testing). For the outdoor applications, the resistance to the ultraviolet aging and atmospheric corrosion also needs to be evaluated.
Stainless Steel Square Tube Testing Methods and Standards
Chemical composition spectrometry analysis method: In accordance with the standards such as GB/T 11170 and ASTM E1086, the spark direct-reading spectrometers or X-ray fluorescence spectrometers are used for the fast quantitative analysis. This method has the simple sample preparation, fast speed and high precision, and is the preferred chemical composition testing method in the production sites and quality control.
Mechanical property tensile testing method: In accordance with the standards such as GB/T 228.1 (ISO 6892-1) and ASTM A370, carried out on a universal material testing machine. The square tube is machined into the specimens of the specified shapes, and the yield strength, tensile strength and elongation after fracture are determined. It is the basic method of evaluating the load-bearing and deformation abilities of the material.
Dimension measurement contact and optical methods: In accordance with the tolerance requirements of the product standards such as GB/T 3094 and ASTM A554. The routine dimensions use the contact tools such as the callipers and micrometers; for the large batches or high-precision requirements, the non-contact optical methods such as the laser scanners and image measuring instruments can be adopted for the automated fast testing.
Non-destructive flaw detection ultrasonic and eddy current methods: The ultrasonic flaw detection (UT) is in accordance with GB/T 5777, using the high-frequency sound wave reflections to detect the internal defects; the eddy current flaw detection (ET) is in accordance with GB/T 7735, using the electromagnetic induction principle to detect the surface and near-surface defects. Both are the common methods of the on-line testing without affecting the product use.
Metallographic examination sample preparation and observation method: In accordance with the metallographic examination method standards such as GB/T 13298 and ASTM E3. The process includes the sampling, mounting, grinding, polishing and etching, and then the observation, photographing and rating of the grain sizes, inclusion grades and structure morphologies under the optical or electron microscopes. It is the fundamental method of the material research.
Salt spray corrosion accelerated testing method: In accordance with the neutral salt spray testing standards such as GB/T 10125 (equivalent to ISO 9227) and ASTM B117. The specimen is placed in a closed salt spray chamber to simulate the marine atmospheric environment, and the corrosion resistance of the different materials or processes is relatively compared by observing the times of the rust appearance on the specimen surfaces.
Pressure testing hydraulic testing method: In accordance with the standards such as GB/T 241 and ASTM A370. For the square tubes used under the pressure-bearing conditions, the water or oil is used as the medium, the specified pressures are applied and maintained for a certain time, and whether there are the leakages, expansions or ruptures of the pipe body is checked. It is the mandatory safety testing verifying their short-term pressure-bearing strength.
Testing Instruments and Equipment
Direct-reading spectrometer (OES): The core equipment for the fast and precise analysis of all the major and trace element compositions in the stainless steel. Its working principle is to excite the sample to generate the characteristic spectra, and determine the element contents by detecting the light intensities through the spectroscopic systems. It has the fast analysis speed, suitable for the furnace-front fast analysis and finished product inspection.
Universal material testing machine: The key equipment for the mechanical property tests such as the tensile, compression and bending. Equipped with the high-precision sensors and control systems, it can accurately record the load-displacement curves and automatically calculate the various strength and plasticity indicators. It is the indispensable instrument for evaluating the mechanical properties of the stainless steel square tube.

The system includes the inverted or upright microscopes, high-resolution cameras and professional image analysis software, and can carry out the quantitative metallographic work such as the grain size rating, phase ratio calculation and inclusion analysis.
Ultrasonic flaw detector and eddy current flaw detector: The core equipment of the non-destructive testing. The ultrasonic flaw detector transmits and receives the ultrasonic signals through the probes, displaying the internal defects in the waveform forms; the eddy current flaw detector identifies the surface defects by detecting the impedance changes of the detection coils. Both can realize the automated scanning for the on-line quality monitoring.
Salt spray corrosion test chamber: The dedicated climate simulation equipment for simulating the accelerated corrosion environments and evaluating the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel. It can precisely control the sodium chloride solution concentrations, spray amounts, chamber temperatures and humidities. The test periods range from dozens of hours to more than a thousand hours, providing the important data for the material selection.
High-precision dimension measuring instruments: Including the digital callipers/micrometers, laser thickness gauges, coordinate measuring machines (CMM) and optical image measuring instruments. These equipment can carry out the high-precision and digital measurement of the geometric parameters such as the side lengths, wall thicknesses, straightness and flatness of the square tube, ensuring that the product meets the drawing tolerances.
Surface roughness tester and coating thickness gauge: The surface roughness tester measures the parameters such as the arithmetic mean deviation of the profile (Ra) by moving the probes across the surface. The coating thickness gauge (magnetic or eddy current type) is used to measure the thicknesses of the coatings on the square tube surface if any. Both are crucial for controlling the product surface quality and coating processes.
