Introduction

A colony counter is a laboratory instrument used to count the number of colonies of microorganisms on a culture plate, and it is used in microbiology laboratories, food testing, clinical laboratories, and pharmaceutical quality control for the enumeration of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms. The colony counter provides an illuminated and magnified view of the culture plate, and it may provide an automatic count of the colonies, in which the image of the plate is captured by a camera and the colonies are counted by image analysis software, or a manual count, in which the operator counts the colonies on the illuminated plate, marking them with a pen or a probe that registers each count; the automatic colony counter provides a rapid and objective count, with features such as adjustable sensitivity, the exclusion of the plate edge and the background, and the differentiation of the colonies by color and size, and it provides the count and the concentration, calculated with the dilution factor, and it is used with Petri dishes of various sizes; the colony counter is used for total viable count, for the enumeration of specific microorganisms, for the assessment of the microbial load, for quality control, for research, and for many other applications. Colony counters are used in food microbiology for the enumeration of microorganisms in food products, in clinical microbiology, in pharmaceutical testing, in environmental monitoring, in research laboratories, and for many other applications. With their counting of colonies, colony counters are essential for microbiological enumeration.
